The BIGGEST mistake people make on January 1st…

3…2…1!!!!

The ball drops. The year has come to a close, and a new one begins. You can barely sleep you are so excited. This is a fresh start, you have already started your list of goals for the next year, and the motivation you have feels a bit different this time.

I am going to do “X” this year.

January 1st, 2nd, 3rd…you can’t think of anything else except for your goals. You are really going to do it! It feels consistent this time around, like nothing can slow you down.

January 4th, 5th, 6th…Things are still great, but Winter break is wrapping up and now some things are coming back into play like school & work.

January 7th, 8th, 9th…Welp! I missed a day, but thats just what happens when the kids have to stay home from school, or I stay late for a work project!

January 10th, 11th, 12th…Unfortunately another missed day in there, but as long as I stay consistent, I still have time to reach my goals!

13th, 14th, 15th…Well, If I just stick to 3x/week as opposed to my original goal of 5x/week, I will still be better off than last year.

February 1st. What were my goals again?

So, how can we break this inevitable loop, and what do top performers do to avoid this trap?

  1. Plan in Quarters, then break it down into months & weeks.

  2. Find a mentor/coach/teacher to lay out a plan for you, and hold you accountable.

Any goal worth chasing is likely not going to be achieved in 1 month, yet this is what everyone does come January 1st. They sign up for the gym in January, or take advantage of some New Years deal that gives them access for the year at a discounted rate (great deal for the gym, knowing you will drop off based on their data).

Instead – find a coach who can walk you through a full quarter. Three month blocks are a sweet spot for making good progress, and then reassessing if your original goal still aligns with your values. A great coach will then help you break the quarterly goal down into monthly targets, based on weekly performances, as well as holding you accountable to them.

The value of a coach lies in their ability to lay out a plan that gives you the best chance for success, in the shortest time possible.

This WILL be more expensive, and a lot of hard work, but if you are serious about your goals it will move you far closer to them than you could alone. I know from experience, because I ALWAYS have multiple high level coaches in different areas of my life!
